Things, other than blogs, that keep me entertained

Yes, Virginia, I do have non-internet related hobbies.

For starters, I read. A lot. Most of my recent reading adventures have been documented over at the UBC. Now, I know I just said I was going to talk about my non-internet hobbies. And I am. See, not all books I read are appropriate for the UBC. Another book I read recently: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Quilting.

See, children, my mother bought me a sewing maching as a graduation present. So instead of letting it gather dust, I've actually been putting it to use by learning to quilt. So far I've only made a few quilt squares, but I'm hoping I'll be able to make a complete quilt by this summer. Go here to check out some of the stuff I've done so far. I was going to put the pictures in the post but there are some technical difficulties.

I've also been cooking a lot more recently. I'm not really "good" at it yet, but I've been making dinner a couple times a week. I haven't killed a family member yet. But tomorrow's dinner is going to be more complicated, so I'll let you know if there are any fatalities.

Along with my growing obsession with ER reruns, I've been trying to catch up on General Hospital. It's not really working out. I've been taping it every day, but I also tape 2 hours of ER everyday, and it's kinda hard to go from such quality-soap-opera-hospital-shenanigans to such half-assed-soap-opera-hospital-shenanigans. And since there are only a handful of characters about whom I actually give a shit (the Spencers, Dr. Robin and Dr. Patrick, and Maxie), it's not really worth it. But it is the end of Feb sweeps so soon we'll know who's been killing all the Port Charles ladies. Or we may already know, I haven't watched Friday's episode or today's yet.

Hey, remember last year (I think it was May sweeps) when Lucky was [sexily] addicted to pills and having an affair with Maxie and Liz was going to leave him because she's a whore who was pregnant with Jason's babay, meanwhile Lulu had slept with her step-brother Dillon Quartermain and was pregnant and had made the extremely difficult decision [JMB was robbed at the Emmys!] to have an abortion despite the fact that the Q's had done everything they could think of to make her have the baby, and Luke showed up and supported Lulu and then, after dropping Lulu off at the clinic, goes to see Laura and right at 7 (the time of Lulu's abortion), he takes Laura's hand and looks at her with so much sadness... you can't tell me there are no good actors on soaps! Just watch the clip below, this is the type of thing I wish they would do more often. Had they submitted this episode to the Emmys, they would have won Best Drama for sure.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that I do things besides play online. And, according to my own list, I like to read, sew, cook, and watch soap operas. Moral of the story? I'm like a housewife, but with less sex.

My 3rd UBC Contribution

I just finished reviewing I Am America (And So Can You!) for the UBC. Here's the links to my thoughts (actually, it's mostly the thoughts of Stephen T. Colbert, but that's the way it should be).

Introduction through Chapter 4
Chapter 5 through Chapter 9
Chapter 10 through the End

All the drama I could ever need

When was the last time you watched reruns of ER on TNT? If you're me, you watch everyday. In fact, if you're me, you spent the weekend messing with the vcr/tv connection so that it would properly record ER everyday, even days when I have to work. I don't know why I'm getting into ER now, like 37 years after it premiered, but I'm totally going to be checking the seasons out from the library.

If you're like me and lead a very uneventful life during which you probably only have about 4 hours of stuff to do everyday, you might as well just watch TNT all day. You can do your work when Las Vegas or Charmed is on. Back in my younger days (about a month ago before I started working) when I could stay up until 3am or so on a weeknight, it was a happiness of mine to be able to catch old episodes of The X-Files late at night. I kinda wish they would show the X-Files at some other time during the week so I wouldn't only be able to watch if I could will myself to stay awake that late. Maybe I can check those DVDs out too.

Of course on Thursdays you're gonna hafta watch USA, because TNT completely changes it's schedule to show NBA games. But that's ok, because Law & Order is probably on USA.

Moral of the Story: With TNT and USA (and occasionaly the Discovery Channel) you never have to leave the house or interact with others. It's a good thing, I promise.

Stuff That's Happening

I'm not really in a blogging mood, but I do have some stuff to update:
  1. I got a job, I'll be working part-time at our local library. I start next week. Mom's already told me that I'll have to get her a library card because she saw a book at Target today that she wants to read but she can't bring herself to pay $12 for a paperback book. I understand.
  2. Speaking of not paying outrageous prices for books, yesterday I was wasting time on half.com and ended up buying Middlesex for about $0.75 and The Idiot's Guide to Quilting for $0.99. Yay for cheap books!
  3. Remember a couple days ago when I was bitching about live music? Well, I don't have any solid information yet, but I have it on good authority that Joe Firstman is going to be touring again this summer. Why we have to wait until summer, I don't know.
  4. The final season of Gilmore Girls was on sale at Target this week, so I was able to complete my collection. And I decided for sure that when I go get my hair cut, I'm getting bangs like Rory.
That's really all I've got going on right now.
