Hold on to this lullaby

I'm taking a break from the other things I really should be writing to say that I am OBSESSED with this song.

This song is fantastic. It was written for the Hunger Games soundtrack, and it does an amazing job of capturing a mood without being blatantly about the games. I've been ambivalent about Taylor Swift in the past, but if this is the direction she's going to go in with her music I can see myself becoming a huge fan. Clearly she should only write songs with T Bone Burnett from now on. The song is gorgeous and haunting, and Taylor's voice has never sounded so beautiful.

PS, I'm going to see the movie for a second time tonight, this time with my mom, grandma, and sister. Mom and sis haven't read the books, so it'll be interesting for me to hear their interpretations.

NaBloPoMo. Oh no.

So I decided to try my hand at NaBloPoMo, where you post at least once a day for the entire month of November. Basically, I'm doing too well at this whole graduate school thing, and I need something at which I'm guaranteed to fail. The likelihood of me actually accomplishing this "blog every day" nonsense is about as likely as me accomplishing that whole "shower every day" thing.

The BlogHer prompt for November 1st is "What is your favourite part of writing?" I'm pretty sure I speak for all grad students when I say that the best part of writing is when you give up and just submit the damn paper as-is. And then get an A-. My favorite part of blogging is writing something I know will make Abby laugh. She is my target demographic. Aim small, miss small.

I'm predicting that tomorrow morning I'm going to wake up, convinced that this was all a dream. I'll come to this here blog, read this post and say to myself "Dammit. Now I actually have to write something."

I don't know which part is more brilliant, turning The Silence of the Lambs into a musical or having said musical acted out by Legos. Obviously it is full of win.

Abs, I don't know if you watch The Office, but this clip below is possibly my favorite moment of television from the last year. It's from the season finale. Pam, who apparently is an awesome vollyball player, sprains her ankle during a match at the company picnic and has to go get it x-rayed. Well, the doctor has some other news for Pam. You don't hear anything, but it's pretty obvious what's going on. John Krasinski kills me every time I watch this.

Name that Tune FTW

A few weeks ago I was watching TV late at night when I thought I heard Pot Kettle Black in a commercial for Observe and Report. I wanted to verify, but I couldn't find the clip on youtube and I didn't see the commercial again, so I assumed I had been hallucinating. Happens all the time. Well, I finally found the commercial on youtube, so I know that I'm not actually going crazy. This commercial is a little different than the one I've been seeing, because the one I've been seeing actually plays less of the song, therefore earning me more points in Mr. D's game of "Name that Tune." True story: in first grade I kept falling asleep during Mr. D's music class and apparently it was such a problem my parents had to be called. I guess I was the first Wilmo student to be bored to Zzzzs by Mr. D. I would not be the last.

Superb Hand Eye Coordination

I love on Bones when Dr. Brennan gets to pretend to be someone else, she gets so into it. In the first or second season Booth and Brennan go undercover as a boxer and his girlfriend, and it's a great episode. Even better is this recent episode where Booth and Brennan have to go undercover as circus performers. She has so much fun, it's great.

It was Art

Tonight on The Daily Show, right towards the end of Jon Stewart's interview with Tim Robbins, Jon made a comment that he wanted dumber people in the Navy Seals. As anyone who has watched The Daily Show knows, right after the interview they cut to a commercial break. And the very first commercial shown after Jon Stewart says there should be dumber people in the Navy Seals? A Navy recruitment commercial. It was, for lack of a better word, art.

And of course, I can't call something art without thinking of this from The Soup:

Call it Off

Tegan and Sara have released the video for their new single "Call it Off". Being that it's quite possibly my favorite song off "The Con," I was predisposed to love the video. My own biases aside, it's a fantastic video. One simple, beautiful, powerful image is all you need in a music video if the song is equally simple, beautiful, and powerful.




Also, I love Sara's new haircut. I like it much better than the Forest Fone era haircut (remember back when T & S had the same haircut?). Back then it was too much of a pseudo mullet. Speaking of which, does Tegan just have one long bit of hair now? I mean, she's awesome and can do whatever she wants, but objectively, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Let's just look at pictures of Sara's pretty new hair:

I'm starting to about cutting my hair again. I don't know if I'd go quite as short as Sara, but I do like how her bangs kinda swoop into that side bit of hair.
